I've always been curious, so here i am doing something about it.

my setup:
NTSC-U 4.2
cIOSx rev19 base38 @249
hermes v5 at 222, 223, & 202 using defaults
bootmii as boot2, latest HBC, etc.

i don't have preloader or cioscorp, just what i need for all kinds of backups (wii, gcn, WW, VC, emulators)
double post:
i would have thought that nearly everyone here had a modded wii. an interesting surprise.
I have, but I don't remember all I have on there. The only thing I really use is a Wii USB loader, that's if I actually ever turn my Wii on. Wii homebrew kind of sucks, so I don't really mess with it.
there are a few standout titles.

but yeah, the only homebrew i extensively use are emulators. and those are well put together programs.
What I don't like about it, is that I had to patch system files. Like when a new game came out, I would have to do things to the system to play it. Though, I haven't had to do that in a long time. Unlike other systems I've modded, they were quick and easy, and I didn't have to do anything with the system again. The PSP is an exception, but updating it is about the same process as official firmware. I didn't have to install any extra stuff to play games I downloaded unlike the Wii. I don't know whether the people making homebrew, and such for the Wii are bad at it, or if the system is just tough to work with. It's just a lot easier with most other systems.
Well, if I had a Wii, I would use emulators absolutely... Probably something to use *cough* backups possibly, but I don't know the Wii World that well.
I can tell you for a fact that I haxored my Wii. My setup is slightly different though:

System Menu 4.1U
Priiloader 0.4b (my safety net)
DARKCORP 1.0 (cIOSCORP 4.0) (my awesome backup setup)
Custom Mario Themed menu
cIOS rev17 IOS249
bootmii as IOS
Latest HBC

I don't have a USB external harddrive so I don't have access to USB Loader GX (Plus I can never install Hermes v5 at IOS' 222, 223, & 202 because the program freezes every time and I don't know what I need to install it offline.)

(my Wi-Fi connector doesn't work in my new computer... and I don't have access to a wireless router.)
i cant fully remember mine but this is what i know:

System menu 4.0E (with custom theme of Windows XP Big Grin)
Priiloader 0.28 (has saved me before)
Bootmii as Boot2
latest Cios (i cant remember which but i always update)
Latest HBC
4 different backup launchers (including GC backup launcher)
loads of virtual games
i think thats it
I haven't modded my Wii at all.
I buy the few games that are worth playing ^^

Besides, the internet I use is supervised, so I can't download games anyway Tongue
Since my wii is at home and my apartment is several hours away I have the archaic neogamma and starfall 3.2 setup.

It hasn't had any problem playing most games though after updating neogamma.

that's less of an issue now. if you update the HBC package, and then use dop-mii to upgrade your system menu version, the rest is just tweaks in your loader of choice.

i've only used usbloader gx and occasionally neogamma for the odd disc, and each of those require a manual tweak for newer games. in gx it's because i don't want to turn the 002 fix into a default global option. but once it's made, at least for gx, it's saved so you don't need to worry about it anymore.

i think it's an issue with cioscorp that doesn't let hermes install. cisocorp turns the system into ios soup, ie., it scrambles everything around.

so the hermes installer sees that 222, 223, and 202 are different from what's expecting, and un-gracefully quits. it's brick protection.

however, with cioscorp, hermes also isn't needed, since cioscorp is such an extensive mod. i know that people modded the way i am have issues with certain games (sam and max), whereas cioscorp guys could play it just fine.

i use hermes because it's compatibility was/(probably still is) better than 249's, and usbloader gx supports it fully. i just have to turn on the 002 error fix for all newer games that i load onto the hdd.
I installed HBC twice (once again after firmware update deleted it) using twilight hack then the indiana pwns method. Have gc and wii backup loaders installed, tons of wii ware and VC gamess on it. Its modded enough I'd say. But I am growing tired of the default menu so that'll have to change soon. My wii is NTSC-U 4.2.
all my wii had was the HBC which i did using the banner bomb exploit. i was going to add backups of my games onto it i just needed to find a hard drive unfortunately my brother (who owns the wii) wanted to update it so he can get a new look on the dashboard. i havn't check but i think there is no way around that.
it's actually very easy to re-hack a 4.2 wii.

there's an updated bannerbomb, use that to install HBC.

then, get the latest dop-mii to re-trucha 36 and remove stubs.

from there, it's all open again.

unless you're talking about something else.
Is there a need to update to 4.2? cos i haven't and i don't think I'm losing out on anything
as of right now, there's no pressing need.

i do believe that wii sports resort and NSMB require 4.1, though.

i like staying up to date, and 4.0+ is required to use SDHC cards, and have the ability to play WW and VC from SD card. it's also way less of a hassle than trying to figure out which select ios's you need to update to get games like MM10 and whatnot working properly.
I have 4.0 anyway and i don't think i need to update so i won't but NSMB still works for me as long as i use the right backup launcher which for me is the Neo Gamma Launcher (latest one) not sure about Wii sports resort but I'm guessing it'll still work
also an option, as most loaders block updates on disc.

like i said, i just enjoy staying up to date.

it is important to have 4.2 hackable, for obvious reasons. i know someone who updated without thinking, some people still buy legit (just not all of it) (and an up to date system makes that easy to handle), and people are introduced to wii hacking all the time.
I have a modded wii.
It was 4.2 but i downgraded to 3.2 becuase my neogamma was having a problem loading Iso's
downgrades can be dangerous, depending on your model of wii.

it would have been easier to update neogamma and any cIOS's you had installed.
